Recorded Workshops

Introduction to Qualitative Analysis with NVivo
Interested in getting started with qualitative research but don’t know much about the software? NVivo is a popular tool for organizing, managing and analyzing qualitative data. This introductory session will provide an overview of NVivo’s capabilities and demonstrate how to use it to get started on a qualitative research project.

Basic Data Handling in Excel
Introductory session on handling research data using Excel. Learn some of the basics of setting up and managing data for a research project, including planning a data project, file organization and documentation, and setting up data for analysis in Excel. Includes a demonstration of how to use various Excel data features, including formulas and pivot tables.

Getting Started Analyzing Data in SPSS
SPSS is a popular package for analyzing data. This session will discuss how to get started on a simple quantitative analysis project using SPSS. Topics covered will include getting summary statistics, creating and modifying variables, creating graphs, running simple analyses, and interpreting SPSS output.

Research Data Management: Plans, Tools and Funder Requirements
The Canadian Tri-Agency Research Data Management Policy, released early in 2021, introduced new requirements for researchers applying for grants from CIHR, SSHRC, and NSERC. This workshop covers these requirements, introduces some important elements of a data management plan, and discusses data sharing and archiving. This workshop also describes a new Western-customized assistant for writing Data Management Plans that will help you choose the most appropriate, locally supported technologies.

Sharing and Archiving Data with Borealis
Western Libraries provides access to Borealis, a publicly accessible, secure Canadian data repository system using Dataverse software for sharing and archiving data. Dataverse allows for data to be released and shared openly or privately with precision at the file level. Learn to create a personal or group archive for your data, add, share and restrict files, get a DOI, and create and publish metadata, data and documents.

Social Media Data for Research
This session provides an introduction to doing research using social media data. It covers popular social media platforms for research including Twitter, Reddit, Youtube; different ways of getting access to social media data; common types of analysis; and useful tools and ethical considerations. No advance knowledge of programming, APIs or statistics is assumed, and multiple methods of accessing data are discussed.

The Mathematics of Risk: An introduction to guaranteed data de-identification
This webinar is devoted to the mathematical and theoretical underpinnings of guaranteed data anonymization. Topics covered include an overview of identifiers and quasi-identifiers, an introduction to k-anonymity, a look at some cases where k-anonymity breaks down, and anonymization hierarchies. Much of the academic material looking at data anonymization is quite abstract and aimed at computer scientists, while material aimed at data curators does not always consider recent developments. This webinar is intended to help bridge the gap.

Town Hall: Building the Future of Research Data Management at Western
This Town Hall was held to seek feedback from the campus community on Western's Institutional Strategy to support Research Data Management. Although developed in response to a Tri-Agency mandate, the Strategy is intended to shape the future of Research Data Management at Western for all researchers, grant funded or not, student or faculty, regardless of discipline.
